Discussion on Solnit's Abolish High School

Discussion on Solnit's Abolish High School

Q 1) Consider Solnit’s purpose, and think about it on both a global and local level (both her overall purpose in the essay and smaller pieces of purpose along the way). Substantive – What is she trying to say? What does it seem she most wants to share with us? Affective – Who is her audience (and what makes you say that)? What effects is she trying to have? Here it is especially important to consider both overall and at small moments. Ethical – How does she seem to want to be perceived? How does she build ethos and authority? 2) Based on how you understand her purpose, what would you say is Solnit’s strategy? Does she make any specific rhetorical moves that seem to be part of that strategy? What kind of appeals does she make? 3) Identify Solnit’s claims, describe what different kinds of evidence she presents, and find as many instances as possible of qualifiers and rebuttals

Solnit did not attend high school but being a voracious reader gave her the chance to go to college. Everyone may not be a voracious reader. We cannot expect every person in the U.S who does not attend high school to spend most of his time reading. Thus, I feel Solnit’s point of view is only from her perspective she does not look into the wider picture or masses here. She only considers those audiences that are as privileged as her or only those who have resources enough to buy a lot of books.
